Lizzie Borden

What calmness she displayed

It was a hot August day in 1892 when Lizzie Borden allegedly used an ax on her father and stepmother in their Fall River, Massachusetts home, for which she was famously put on trial for murder. Well, it's August over a millenium later, which is excuse enough to present here a ditty of mine about the infamous Lizzie Borden case.

Lizzie Borden's mama
Died when Liz was small
Then her daddy married Abby Gray
The old man was a miser
So said one and all
Liz resented Abby every day

When she was arrested
Liz was thirty-two
A spinster, what calmness she displayed
Though accused of killing
Her dad and Abby too
Found dead by the Borden family maid

Was it you with the ax, Lizzie Borden?
Was it you struck 'em so many times?
Is it sadly the facts, Lizzie Borden,
Decent girls can do such awful crimes?

The trial of Lizzie Borden
Was a sight to see
She hired the best lawyers to be found
There was testimony
About her charity
News reporters came from miles around

Tell me how did it feel, Lizzie Borden,
When that jury brought its verdict in?
Did it all seem unreal, Lizzie Borden,
Found not guilty and back home again?

What's this world
Coming to?
How can such stories
Be true?

Was it you with the ax, Lizzie Borden?
Was it you struck 'em so many times?
Is it sadly the facts, Lizzie Borden,
Decent girls can do such awful crimes?

Tell me how can it be, Lizzie Borden?
Can good girls go so bad in these times?

Was it you, Lizzie Borden?
