Edgar and Doctor Po, both wearing swimsuits and tans, sat at a table sipping pisco sours by the pool at the Hickenlooper mansion. They were admiringly watching two women, about thirty and lovely, diving and frolicking in the water. The women were wearing those new two-piece swimsuits called bikinis, one of France's finer contributions to Western civilization.
Diego arrived, walking up to the table in his dapper white suit. "Diego! Welcome," Edgar said. "How was the trip to Transylvania?"
"Good. But I was worried the whole time about Hi and Eva's cure."
"This is Diego Vara," Edgar said to Po.
"Yes, I believe we have met," said the doctor.
"At your lab in Buenos Aires," Diego said as he and Po shook hands. "I am glad you are, Doctor Po."
Diego sat down at the table. "Tell me, Diego," Edgar said, as he gestured toward the bathing women. "Do they have French bikinis in Peru? These are the first ones the doctor has seen."
"Oh, we Peruvians are much too conservative for such skimpy apparel," Diego said with a chuckle. He looked at Doctor Po. "How are they doing, Doctor?"
"Wonderfully," Po said, watching the women. "They are both splendid creatures."
"I believe he means Hi and Eva," Edgar good-naturedly said to Po.
"Oh. They are doing all right. I'll go in and check on them shortly."
Diego said, "Good. I would like to go with you."
"Have a pisco sour, Diego," Edgar said. A middle-aged butler had brought a pisco sour on a small tray to Diego.
"Thank you." Diego took the drink, the butler leaving with the tray. "Doctor, I have been wondering. How did you arrive at the cure?"
"The secret," said Po, "was my discovery that even vampire bats--born vampires--can be weaned off blood and learn to eat other creatures."
"Who would have thought," Edgar said, "with all the legends and myths about vampires, that you could lick it by going cold turkey?"
Inside the mansion, a small guest bedroom on the second floor had been converted into a spacious padded cell. A door with an observation window was installed. Inside the cell, Hi and Eva, both breathing heavily, were taking a break from thrashing around, though still restrained in their straitjackets.
"How you doing?" Hi gasped.
"I couldn't make it without you," Eva said, gasping too.
"Same here." After they rested a few moments, Hi tried to kiss her, but their awkward positions made it impossible. They began moving around, trying to get into position for a smooch.
"God, I hope this cure works," Eva said.
"It will," Hi said confidently, moving, almost in position to kiss her. "Oh, we'll always be wanting some blood. We'll just have to be strong."
He was finally in position, his face over hers. They gazed into each other's eyes. "Anyway, it was worth it," Hi said softly. "We got Hitler. Together. We got him. What do you say to that, my first lady?"
Eva smiled. Just before their lips met, she whispered, "Heil Hickenlooper."
